Hi there Deltora fans. This is my first review of the Star of Deltora series, this time I will be reviewing the first book in the series; Shadows of the Master. Obviously do not read in you haven't read any books in this series yet. As always, the opinions in this review are my own, but please let me know of your own opinion in the comments below.
Shadows of the Master is in my opinion one of Rodda's best works. Britta, the POV character and the primary protagonist is a very relatable and interesting character and Rodda introduces an original background story for her. I like how this time around, Rodda stayed away from the 'saving the world' plot and focused on a more personal storyline of a young girl following her dreams, which helps make the story more realistic. Although the story is based in Del, Rodda does not rely on characters from the main Deltora series in order to enhance the story, which allows Britta and her 'world' to flourish. Unlike the Three Doors series, secondary characters are decent and their personal backgrounds are explained in proper detail. Britta's emerging friendship with Jewel, and eventually Sky, works well and makes sense, while maintaining a healthy rivalry.
Britta's story begins small, within the city of Del, where she lives with her mother and sister. However Britta remembers her past and longs to become a trader, like her father, who is despised by the public. Britta's anger over her father's betrayal in abandoning herself and her family to seek the Staff of Tier longs on her mind, and Rodda explores this internal relationship magnificently. All the subtle hints to original series help to bring Britta's story into the original three series, while maintaining originality, something Rodda did well with the Three Doors, but seems much improved with this one. It was also a relief for the 'villians' in this story to not have any connection to Shadow Lord, and for the Shadow Lord to be only mentioned briefly in regards to his invasion of Deltora.
To conclude, Shadows of the Master is a fantastic introduction to a fresh and original series. The books length is refreshing in that although it is a small book, it managed to effectively cram a lot of detail and background while keeping myself engaged and wanting to read more. This is a small review for the fact that the later books in the series expand upon this book in so many ways that I want to leave some info for my next few reviews. This exemplies how much of an excellent introduction this book is.
