Sparking rod is in need of more information! Sparking rod is lacking an example with Pi-Ban as well as the scene in the Shadow Arena where Lief, Barda and Jasmine get knocked out with sparking rods (and Emlis is the only one to escape). |

The sparking rod was a weapon created by the Shadow Lord, developed around the time Lief, Jasmine, Barda and Emlis entered the Shadowlands. The Bak pod considered using the rods against Vraals because of its effectiveness and strength.[1]
The sparking rod resembles a heavy stick. Sparks as well as seemingly electric shocks are produced at one end of it.[1]
It is likely that the sparking rods are weapons that shock with electricity. The rods have different modes, or levels, of power, ranging from something akin to a taser to lethal shocks. It is unknown if the rods operate on magic in any way or whether they are purely a piece of technology, perhaps being electric or working off of mechanical and chemical principles. Sparking rods can leave red burn marks when they are used on human skin.[1]
It is unknown how the sparking rod is operated.[1]
History[]
The Shadowlands[]
- Main article: The Shadowlands (book)
A Vraal chased the companions to the door of the Factory. The companions escaped inside but the Vraal kept bashing against the door alerting Grey Guards in the process. They came to investigate and when they realised that a Vraal was on their doorstep they considered using the new sparking rods to deal with it.[1]
Effects[]
The rod can switch to different levels of power: shower, stun, and full.[1]
Shower[]
This mode causes a shower of sparks and is usually used to mock or provoke prisoners. One example was... (need to write example with Pi-Ban.)[1]
Stun[]
The effectiveness of stun is based on the size of the victim (ex. two strikes against Barda; one against Lief and Jasmine). A chain effect occurs if all the energy per strike is not used transferring the remaining energy to next closest victims (ex. Jasmine with Kree). If there are no victims nearby, the shock can be lethal since all the energy is forced onto one.[1]
Full[]
A potential mode that the Baks would have used against Vraals because the stun mode would be ineffective. This mode would be lethal against humans and other smaller opponents.[1]
Trivia[]
- The length of the sparking rods are unknown, however the description of them as "a heavy stick" may indicate that could be like electric batons.
- It is unknown how sparking rods truly work, though it seems implied that they give electric shocks and can work as tasers as well as lethal weapons. It could also be like the long electrocuting cattle prods used in the real world, which are quite similar to electric batons but usually somewhat longer. It might also be a long tool/weapon, just thick in design making it "heavy."
- It is unknown whether the sparking rod is magical in any way, as much of the Shadow Lord's technologg is.
- It is unknown how the sparking rod is operated - both how it is turned on and off, whether it need to be actively engaged to create sparks and/or shocks, and what the method of changing between the three levels of power is. Perhaps there is a knob or dial for changing modes, like there was on the magic-driven scorch clubs used by Chieftain Olt's Gifters.
