The River Broad, also known as the Broad River, is the longest river in Deltora. Beginning in the Barrier Mountains, it flows through Opal, Lapis Lazuli and Amethyst territory where it joins the River Tor and flows out into the Silver Sea. The river is named for its width and can only be crossed by boat. A large range of fish inhabit its waters.[1] The only exception to this is the River Broad Bridge in the far north of opal territory.

History[]

Tales of Deltora[]

Adin had to cross the Broad during his quest to gather the seven tribal gems of Deltora. Eventually he was aided by the spirits of Liza and Dodd, who rowed him across the river and let him stay in their house overnight.[2]

Secrets of Deltora[]

Doran the Dragonlover came to the River Broad during his travels around Deltora. He wrote about it in his traveller's guide, Secrets of Deltora, as well as the wildlife that could be found around the river.[1]

The Deltora Book of Monsters[]

Fifty years after the reign of King Brandon, a canal branching off the River Broad was dug to isolate the Hira Plain from the rest of Opal territory and keep the rat plague from spreading. The shallow canal connected the river to itself, completely encircling the Hira Plain.[3]

City of the Rats[]

Lief, Barda and Jasmine used Water Eaters to cross the Broad on their way to the City of the Rats. When night fell and the rats attacked, the companions fought them off by wading into the river.[4]

The Shifting Sands[]

Lief, Barda and Jasmine were concealed by Wise Fish in the Broad canal when an Ak-Baba came to investigate the City of the Rats.[5]

The Sister of the South[]

Lief, Barda and Jasmine flew over the Broad on the back of Fidelis to reach the grey tide in Hira. By the time Steven reached the river, the grey tide had blackened. People near the river witnessed its destruction, though they were too awe-struck to cheer.[6]
