Much later in the series, the opal would help Barda recover from his temporary blindness, caused by opening the chamber of the Sister of the South.

it also can strengthen Opal dragons. Notably, the opal is the only gem on the Belt of Deltora Lief has actually avoided touching (for fear of its visions) and has done so more than once. It can give glimpses of the future and strengthen one's sight.

History

Creation As foretold by the fortune telling stones of the Torans, fire and water "attacked" the land of dragons. The land gave a powerful stone as a gift to each of the tribes. The opal was the lands gift to the Plains tribe.

City of the Rats

Almost immediately after obtaining it, Lief was struck with a vision of himself trapped in the Shifting Sands, the location of the Lapis Lazuli. The great Opal was guarded by the arrogant and pompous Reeah, who wore the stone in his crown, in the City of the Rats. After Reeah was killed (and ironically devoured by the very rats he fed on), the gem was added to the reconstructed Belt. The Opal played a small role in retrieving the Lapis Lazuli, its call making it easier for Lief to slide out without causing the Hive's pyramid to collapse. Much later in the series, the opal would help Barda recover from his temporary blindness, caused by opening the chamber of the Sister of the South.
