The Gifters were a special force of soldiers who served Chieftain Annoltis. Their purpose was to capture prisoners for the Gifting ritual that was to take place every seven years. The Gifters were disbanded after the second Gifting failed, with most of them having taken off their uniform and the ones that did not running away after they saw what happened to their leader, Bern,[1] however before Rye of Weld changed the past by causing the death of Annoltis and the failure of the second Gifting, there existed an alternative future in which Annoltis kept on living and ruling and carrying out the Gifting ritual forever, and he would presumably still have been employing Gifter soldiers for this work.[2]
The Gifters wore a uniform consisting of a black helmet that concealed all but their eyes and mouth, black boots, black leggings, and a scarlet tunic embroidered with the crest of Chieftain Annoltis, a large "O" formed by a sea serpent swallowing its own tail. Most of them would also have worn a belt, used to hold their scorch club.[1]
