History[]

Tales of Deltora[]

Garth was a successful trader, leaving his daughter Rosalyn, whose mother had died in childbirth, in Del with her grandmother during sea voyages. He often told her stories about the lands he visited during his travels, sparking a lifelong love for trading in Rosalyn.
Wishing to obtain a second ship and make his trading business more efficient, he promised Rosalyn's hand in marriage to the wealthy and influential Mobbs, a much older man. His daughter agreed, but stipulated that she be at last taken on a year's trading voyage to Dorne first.
Despite the close supervision of his trusted friend and ship's cook Frere, Rosalyn snuck away to explore the town, and fell in love at first sight with a part-Fellan man in a mysterious shop. Rosalyn left a note for Garth and eloped with the man.
Enraged, Garth secretly paid an old woman of Dorne to track down the location of the new lovers, and set sail back to Del. On the way, he is implied to have murdered Frere in revenge for failing to watch his daughter, claiming his death had been due to sea serpents. He bribed his crew to claim that Rosalyn was simply staying for a holiday on Dorne.
Back in Del, he had his ship repainted, and some time later, when he received a letter from a strange, small ship, Garth set sail for Dorne once more. On the way, he shaved his beard and changed his clothing, and had the name of the Golden Dragon painted out, replacing it with The Avenger until they returned to Del.
Arriving in Dorne, Garth and a group of men raided the house in which Rosalyn was living. The group killed her husband, and Garth gave her a potion to wipe her memory, and gave her infant son whom he found there to the old woman who had sent word about her.
Returning to Del with Rosalyn, Mobbs was shocked by her pallid and soulless appearance, and backed out of the marriage.[1]

Physical appearance[]

Garth had black hair and a thick beard, described as having "dark good looks" like his daughter, and usually wore a trader's jacket, frilled shirt, and well-fitted pants.

Personality[]

Garth was spoken of as a fair man due to his practice of paying his crew part of the profits of trading voyages, but he was in reality a deeply stern, strict and controlling person. He was accustomed to getting his way, whatever the cost, and he used and disposed of his followers as he saw fit.
His daughter Rosalyn was the only person who he had room for in his heart, as he had once found that even his love for his wife eventually failed to stand in his mind against the concrete security of material wealth. Rosalyn's disobedience to him caused him to readily commit terrible deeds in order to regain control, believing that he knew what was best for her.[1]

Abilities[]

Garth was a talented captain and well known for his abilities to navigate the seas and sail.
