The Hungry Isle ebook at last

For about 2-3 years I've tried to find what had actually happened to make The Hungry Isle not be released as an ebook. I tried many ways to contact Scholastic, but I always got in touch with the wrong departments. Always one that had nothing to do with the actual publishing of the books.

But then, last year, on September 8, 2020, after a few days of trying to find out how to contact Rodda's own publicist (whose address is in the books themselves, I finally managed to find an official email address used by her, and so I contacted her about it. This was done based on a recommendation by Scholastic themselves.

It took about a month time to get a reply, so I also sort of forgot about the email a few times. However, about ten hours ago one of our a…

Happy holidays

Happy holidays from the staff of Deltora Quest Wiki, to all the fans of Emily Rodda and/or our users on this wiki! It's time to spend time with your family, friends and other loved ones, to give. Maybe it's time to give a book? One of Rodda's? Maybe get and read one of her newer books, like The Glimme or The Shop at Hooper's Bend, or His Name was Walter. Whatever you decide to do, we are grateful to have you help us here with editing, and to have you be part of this tightly knit and small-ish fandom with us. And meanwhile, funnily enough, to be part of this great phenomenon that is Deltora Quest and the rest of the Roddaverse. It's funny that Rodda's books are so huge, especially in Australia, and yet there is not much of a fandom or buzz …

The King of the Rats covers chapters fifteen, sixteen, and seventeen of City of the Rats, and is the final episode in the City of the Rats arc.

Reeah is our new character for the episode. The guardian of the Opal is mostly true to his book self: massive snake? Check. Crown containing the Opal on his head? Smaller than in the book, but still there. Telepathic powers and vanity higher than the city's ceiling? Also present. Strange four-segmented jaws and a spikes growing out of his head? Not something found in snakes, but probably done to make him…

Crossing the river coveres chapter twelve, thirteen, and fourteen of City of the Rats. And since there are no new characters introduced, let's move right on to the next section.

  • The companions learning that the Ra-Kacharz's food cart is destined for Del, revealing where the food for the palace came from all these years.
  • Tom inviting the Grey Guards inside for some drinks before they hit the road, and informing the Ra-Kacharz that they would be walking back to Noradz since their muddlets had been, "stolen."

Deltora Comparison: Escape

Hello Deltora fans, one and all and welcome to episode ten of my Deltora Quest comparison.

Escape coveres the rest of chapters eight, nine, ten, and eleven of City of the Rats

I suppose now is as good a time as any to talk about Tira, since I considered her too minor in the previous episode to address.

Compared to her book counterpart, anime Tira is a lot more confident and, like many other characters, she talks a lot more than she did initially. They anime still has her act terrified when they need her to, but she seems to be more outspoken and questions the Ra-Kacharz more often than she did in the book. She also acts more indipendantly in the anime, wheras in t…

Noradz the Clean covers the rest of chapter six, seven, and part of chapter eight from City of the Rats.

The people of Noradz are pretty accurate to their book description, wearing all black and high boots. However, they're supposed to have shaved heads, which is a little detail that adds a lot to the cult atmosphere of Noradz.

The nine Ra-Kacharz who govern the city are mostly accurate. They're dressed from head to toe in red, leaving only their eyes bare, carry whips, and the eight lesser ones almost always defer to their leader, Reece. However, their garments look to b…

Since we once again find ourselves beginning a new arc in the anime, I will give you my brief thoughts on the book version.

City of the Rats is a very interesting book, especially following Lake of Tears, which I believe is the golden standard of a Deltora Book. Unlike the previous entry, City of the Rats has very few setpieces. Most of the book takes place either in the city of Noradz or Tom's shop. As such, there's barely any puzzles or monsters in this book, instead relying on a sense of mistery and stealth as our heroes have to circumnavigate thes…

Sorceress Thaegan covers the rest of Lake of Tears chapter fourteen, fifteen, and sixteen. This makes it the final episode of the Lake of Tears arc.

The sorceress Thaegan is the big apperane for this episode, and boy did the animators do a good job brining her to life. Thaegan is one of the most accurate characters to her book counterpartin terms of designL: glowing green skin, beautiful complexion, wild silver hair, and a fierce ugliness that reveals itself when she's angry. The anime did give her a ring that she wears on her pinky figure, w…

Hello Deltora fans, one and all and welcome to episode six of my Deltora Quest comparison.

  • 1 Anime comparison

The Monster in the Lake of Tears covers the events of Lake of Tears chapters eleven to thirteed, with the very beginning of fourteen as well.

Our titular monster of the Lake of Tears is Soldeen, the giant eel/cat fish love-child and all his oozing glory. The anime does a very good job sticking true to Mark Mcbride's image, though Soldeen's mouth is more squat and rounded than the torpedo-like trap featured on the book. But for me, the biggest difference in design is that the anime Soldeen is tiny compared to the book. His anatomy seems to be all head with a tiny tail, leani…

Deltora Comparison: Nij and Doj's Trap

Hello Deltora fans, one and all and welcome to episode four of my Deltora Quest comparison. Apologies for the delay, but family buisness and reading some other books got in the way.

  • 1 Anime comparison
    • 1.1 Characters

Nij and Doj's Trap covers the events of Lake of Tears' chapters five to ten, the most chapters covered in any one episode to date (which also added to the delay). As such, this comparisson is goign to be a bit of a long one.

Jin and Jod are the two principal characters this episode. Starting with Jin, she half-resembles her book counterpart. She has the yellow tusks and three horns from the book, but she isn't nearly fat enough, and her overall design looks more insect-like than the grotesk troll…

Since this is the first episode in the new arc, I will be giving my brief thoughts on the book.

If Forests of Silence was an appatizer to get readers excited for Deltora, then Lake of Tears is the main course. Everything we love about Deltora is in this book: puzzles, riddles, monsters, twists and turns, and imaginative set pieces. Also, because this book isn't being split up by two different stories, it is allowed to dedicate all of its time to developing the characters, making them feel more fleshed out and developed than the rushed job Forests of Si…

Jasmine, Girl of the Forest covers the events of the other half of Forests of Silence chapter eleven, twelve, thirteen, and half of chapter fourteen.

My God, what did Japan do to Jasmine? I complained about Lief looking like a generic anime protagonist last time, but at least he still had some semblence of his original character in his base design. Jasmine was described in the book as a wild-haired girl with black hair, slanting eyebrows, green eyes, sun-browned skin, and dressed in the ragged clothing of dead Grey Guards. In the anime... well, they got the green eyes right, and I …

Deltora Comparison: The Adventure Begins!

Hello Deltora fans, one and all, and welcome to my first entry into my comparison series.

This is an idea I have had for a long time where I will be going over each episode of the Deltora Quest anime English Dub and comparing it to the books. The purpose is to see how accurately the anime truly captured the spirit of the books, as well as seeing in what ways the anime might have improved on the original story. Plus, it's always fun to spot as many differences as you can.

For the first blog entries of each arc, I will also be sharing my brief thoughts on the Deltora Quest book this arc covers. And since this is the first arc, we begin with the first book in the series: Forests of Silence.

New Rodda book - His Name Was Walter

Source: http://www.harpercollins.com.au/9781460756188/his-name-was-walter/

His Name Was Walter is a new book by Emily Rodda coming out this year on July 27, 2018 (23/07/2018). It’s a children’s story, published by Harper Collins. About the book from the web page:

From Australia’s favourite storyteller comes a story, within a story, that shows us the extraordinary power of true love and solves a decades-old mystery.

While on a history excursion, an ill-assorted group of four kids and their teacher are left on a country road when their minibus breaks down. At the suggestion of a friendly tow-truck driver, the five take shelter in a nearby old, deserted mansion. There they find a little old desk with a secret drawer. Inside the drawer is a book c…

Hi there Deltora fans. As always, the opinions in this review are my own, but please let me know of your own opinion in the comments below.

Shadows of the Master is in my opinion one of Rodda's best works. Britta, the POV character and the primary protagonist is a very relatable and interesting character and Rodda introduces an original background story for her. I like how this time around, Rodda stayed away from the 'saving the world' plot and focused on a more personal storyline of a young girl following her dreams, which helps make…

Hi there Deltora fans and active contributors. This is my second review of the Three Doors series, this time I will be reviewing The Silver Door, the second book in the series. Obviously do not read in you haven't read The Golden Door and The Silver Door.

Although The Silver Door is a solid book in its own right, in comparison to the other two books in the series, to myself personally, it is the weakest in the series. Unlike The Golden Door which introduces many elements of the original series and introduces a very enjoyable and interactive environment, The Silver Door is a much darker and more serious book, heavily focusing on darker themes like despair and things like slavery and dark magic. The Silver Door does still introduce elements f…

Emily Rodda returns to HarperCollins with a new book!

HarperCollins Australia just recently announced in an article on their website that they are publishing a new book by Emily Rodda in August 2017. The book will be called The Shop at Hooper’s Bend and is in the genre of fantasy. It does not appear that this book will be set in the same world as Deltora, and it doesn't sound like it will be in the same tone or mood either. I think we can expect the book to be for slightly younger children, based on the description on the article, which I have quoted below:

The Shop at Hooper’s Bend follows eleven-year-old Jonquil (known as Quil) Medway, a girl with more than an unusual name. Quil’s parents died in a car accident when she was a baby and Quil now goes to boarding school, but spends her holidays …

Hungry Isle highres cover

Today I discovered this higher resolution version of the cover for The Hungry Isle, in the September 2016 Trade Parade catalogue from Scholastic, released at Issu.com, seemingly before Scholastic did it. I don't believe they have it up even now. To see the catalogue go to this link, https://issuu.com/scholastic_australia/docs/september_trade_parade

As you will notice, the cover art seems a bit brighter and fader in color in the catalogue, but for some reason, everytime I try to upload it to the wiki or put it in some image editor online, like the one on Pixlr.com (haven't tried one on my PC) the color turns darker. Does anyone know the reason for this, and can you possibly fix it for me, unless this is actually the way the original file was …

The Towers of Illica - Review

Hi there folks! I've only recently finished reading the newest book in the Star of Deltora series, The Towers of Illica! There's plenty to discuss and explore in the newest chapter in Britta's journey. As such, there will be spoilers.

In the novel, we see Britta and co. reaching the island of Illica, home to the descendants of pirates whose three families collect rare objects in their towers. Naturally, a new island has me pretty excited, especially in regards to the lore and world of Deltora. Once again, the Star of Deltora is met with an awkward introduction and see's Britta, Jewel and Vashti invited to stay the night at one of the towers. This leaves Britta and Jewel to have a moment to explore the town, and a what a place it is! The idea of…

Scholastic April 2016 catalogue

The Towers of Illica is listed on page 6-7 of Scholastic's new cataogue for books coming out in April 2016. Some new info is available. The book's ISBN/APN is 9781742990644. It is 176 pages long. The size of the book, like the previous installments in the series, re 198 x 128 mm. And it is going to cost 15.99 AUD. The background image used on page 6 is a painting of a cliff next to the sea, with a lighthouse and seabirds circing above, and it is likely that this is supposed to be the island of Illica.

Furthermore, there is a golden-coloured graphic of Australia for some reason, which appears several times in the text. At first I thought it was a new islan. Illica? The Isle of Tier maybe? Who knows? When I extracted the vector graphic as an i…

April's review of Star of Deltora: Shadows of the Master

Back in May, April from the April's Bookworld blog and the YouTube channel Aprilius Maximus had a chance to read Shadows of the Master, the first book in Emily Rodda's upcoming series Star of Deltora. She made a short review of the book in the video above, but meanwhile linked to a longer, more in-depth written review on her blog. It is a very informative review. It tells us when the book takes place and the basic gist of what it is about. I do warn people, however, that the written review contains minor spoilers, so for anyone who wish to wait until August in order to read the book themself and discover everything for the first time, you may want to stay away from this. April's review can be found at http://aprilsbookworld.blogspot.com.au/2…

Book trailer for Star of Deltora: Shadows of the Master has surfaced

Some of the imagery is a bit cheesy, but there's those exclusive trading cards and the image of a book titled Cladd's Mysteries of the Silver Sea, and an image of something that might text from the book. Very cool stuff.
