I've read both the first story arc in Deltora Quest, and the first 18 books in Beast Quest. To be honest, I wasn't a huge fan of Beast Quest, it felt like two characters who were good just for the sake of having a noble protagonist, going from one place to another with no rhyme or reason to their route, defeating beasts. I was sort of worried Deltora Quest would be similar, but it wasn't. Yes, each of the jewels they must find has their own guardian, but the adventures seem to be thought out, and the characters didn't seem so basic, like they actually had personality and a reason to be good.
My theory on Beast Quest is that the books are so much shorter than Deltora Quest, so they don't have much time to tell the story within the pages of the books. And the reading level is aimed for a younger group, and I'm in my 20's. But books like Magic Tree House are short, and although I haven't read much of those in later years, I remember the books being fun, and Jack and Annie actually having their own indivudual personalities. I don't think it's the authors either, because one of them is Cherith Baldry, known for her work on the Warriors team, and she does fairly well on those. I think it's the fact that the books have alternating authors, and with only 75 pages for each to tell a part of the story, they hardly have enough time to develope the characters into ones with unique personalities.
So, has anybody else read some of both Deltora Quest and Beast Quest? If so, what did you think? Did you enjoy Beast Quest more than me? What comparisons and differences have you seen between the two series?
