What did everyone here think of The Hungry Isle? I was seriously disappointed by it. :(
Maybe. I was thinking more that Deltora might have started trading with the Zebak at some point. The Zebak might have shared some of their technology with Deltora, as a sign of good-will or something, and that could be why there was a steam-boat on the River Broad.
Those were my thoughts too. The story was good, though I didn't like parts of it, but the ending was incredibly unsatisfying. It felt very rushed and there were too many things left unresolved.
Yes! I am so waiting for the day Emily Rodda will announce a sequel! Though it might be in vain since we have no clue if she'll ever write a sequel... :/
The end of The Hungry Isle was a huge let-down for me, but I won't go into that (but I will say that I'm among the few who didn't like the big reveals). I agree that there were too many loose ends left unresolved. Jantsy/Britta/Sky wasn't resolved properly, nor was the issue of the thousands of PTSD-stricken Deltorans. The seeds were also laid for another sea voyage when Mab talked about taking Jewel and Sky aboard the Star with her and Britta when it next sets sail. And there's also Sky's unresolved inner turmoil which was caused by what happened on the Isle of Tier. I'd really like to see where Rodda might go with Sky's character development and his relationship with Britta.
About the steam boat...well, there is a steampunk island in the Silver Sea. :D The Isle of the Zebak. Their technology is advanced enough that I can imagine that the steam boat might belong to them.
um, could someone please tell me, what is the Crown of Serpents and in which book is it first mentioned? I've read all the Star of Deltora books but I can't remember the Crown of Serpents being mentioned.
I don't think Britta is trained as a ship's captain, though. She's a trader. From what I read in Star of Deltora, traders hire sailors to captain their ships for them.
I'd like Britta, Sky and Jewel to become the new series trio. Though looking at the end of The Hungry Isle, they still have some ways to go before they're as close to each other as Lief, Barda and Jasmine are.
Key to Rondo is about two kids who get transported to another world via a music box. They end up having many adventures and befriend the people who live there. Since the kids appear to come from our world, I doubt that it's part of the Nine Seas, unless Rondo the world is really part of it somehow? Don't think so, though. Even if it was, I doubt it would become relevant to the plot of a future SoD series. The world itself could appear, but I don't think you'd need to know any plot-related details to understand what's going on.
I like the idea of Britta going on a quest to find this Crown of Serpents, especially if she goes with Jewel and Sky. I really want to see more stories about this trio, since it feels like their story has only just begun. I feel like we didn't get to know Sky and Jewel well enough in SoD and it'd be nice to get to know them better in a new sequel series.
Also, the Shadowlands survivors are severely traumatised, not insane.
And about the bell ringing, maybe it has something to do with giving due to the dead? Or maybe it's a warning to other sailors.
Me and someone else on fanfiction.net talked about there possibly being a connection between the Shadow Lord and the Zebak. We both think that the Shadow Lord may be working with the Zebak somehow. Funnily enough, the Zebak try to invade Maris in "Rowan and the Keeper of the Crystal" through use of a pawn, not so different from what the Shadow Lord would do.
Yes, that scene in Shadowgate was incredibly painful and difficult and scary to read. Especially seeing Lief so changed by the mask. Any sort of mental brainwashing-type stuff creeps me out, so that scene really affected me. But I think that the scariest part of the novel was the climax, with the snakes attacking Kirsten of Shadowgate. In fact, the whole book was a load of nightmare fuel, and I will always consider it the creepiest book in DQ3.

I read Rowan of Rin over a year ago and loved it. :) In many ways it's way better than Deltora Quest.
I noticed when reading tFoS that in the chapter 'The Belt of Deltora', the boldened text from The Belt of Deltora spells the Belt as 'the belt'. It's probably not a big issue though.
It's just that I'm not used to writing histories all in past-tense, my habit's always been to write the 'early life/pre-series' sections in past-tense and the book events in present-tense because that's what always made sense to me, since the events are happening in the series. I mean, when we are introduced to the characters events are happening in the present in the series so I've always used that as a guide to what tense to use.
So, the character histories I've written up are probably in present-tense, unless someone later edited them to make them past-tense. I didn't realise at the time that the character histories had to be written in past-tense and I guess I thought that if I did make a mistake then someone else would come along and edit it again. And I never thought that tense really mattered that much, to be honest.
And, though I haven't looked at the book plot summaries for ages, the last time i looked most were written in present-tense. That's probably partly my fault, since I helped write up a few of them and I didn't think of writing them in past-tense. Do the book plot summaries need to be in past-tense then, if the character histories are in past-tense?
And, is this tense thing specific to this wiki or is it for all wikis? I've seen other wikis which use both past-tense and present-tense in the histories on their character pages and no one's ever specificed which tense to use. :/
Here are the pages:
Sharn
Jasmine
Lief
Barda
Britta (and probably all the Star of Deltora character pages)
Rye
Rowan (and probably all the Rowan of Rin character pages)
I don't get why the character histories need to be in past-tense, but I'm not complaining! :) Especially if it's a wiki rule.
Hey,
I've noticed while looking through character articles that some of the character history "in the series" sections are written in past-tense while some are written in present-tense. I'm just wondering, which is the correct tense to use while editing those sections?
This isn't really about the page, but more what to put on it. I've been thinking about what to write up in the personality section on the Anna page. I think I've managed to get a feel of her personality while reading between the lines in the books, and I think I could type something up for her personality. But, I'm not sure how reliable the information would be since it's not exactly as if the info was openly stated in canon. :/
Also, how do you think it best write up info for Anna's relationships? I'm not sure what to write for the Anna/Jarred relationship other than that they were deeply in love and Jarred was (probably) heartbroken at her death. I do have my own idea of how Anna and Jarred's relationship was like, but I'm afraid that's mostly my headcanon and not openly confirmed by the actual canon.
And also, how strictly should we stick to canon when writing up information? I know that it's important to be accurate and so on when editing but when it comes to pages about characters like Anna who are hardly in the books should we just leave sections blank or can we just fill them in if we have an idea of their personality/relationships from events which happened in a character's backstory?
@Lizziending: I agree. I don't really mind Lief/Jasmine (I don't care either way for them as a pairing, since I find them boring), but it gets annoying since I love reading fics about Jarred/Anna and Endon/Sharn and hardly anyone seems to write about them. It's all about Lief/Jasmine (well... that's probably an exaggeration). Usually if I want to find some Jarred/Anna fics there are only a few, including my own fanfiction about them. So I usually end up reading my own Jarred/Anna fanfiction.
Don't get me wrong, I don't bear a grudge against Lief/Jasmine fanfiction. Some Lief/Jasmine fanfics like the ones by Untaken are beautifully written and very enjoyable. It just gets frustrating sometimes when I want to read about my favorite pairings. But then, I can always just write a fic about them, so it's not that big a deal for me. :)
For anyone who likes reading about Barda/Lindal, Freida Right over on fanfiction.net has written a great fanfic about how they fell in love, called 'What Happens in Broome'. It's worth checking out. :D I never cared much about Lindal/Barda, but that fic made me like them more as a couple. They'll never be my favorite though like Jarred/Anna is. :)
Let's see... there aren't any Marilen/Ranesh fanfics on the DQ Fanfiction Archive. There's an abundance of Lief/Jasmine though, some about Barda/Lindal, a scant few about Jarred/Anna, and probably only one fic featuring Endon/Sharn (one written by me, actually). There's also quite a few fanfics focusing on Doom/Barda (or 'Jarda'), though those are from years ago and by mainly one writer who liked writing about that pairing. I agree that the DQ fandom needs the exposure, which is why I encourage anyone to read (and maybe review? :D) some of the DQ fics on fanfiction.net. They are really good and worth reading.
The books never said that Lindal received an odi-pendant. I just pointed out that Ilica stated that Jewel's aunt did, and that there's a possibility that Jewel's aunt could be Lindal. And I just love the idea of Barda giving Lindal a pendant with a pattern meaning forever. :')
Actually somone over on the Post-Detora Stress Syndrome Forum at fanfiction.net has suggested that Jewel is actually Lindal's niece, instead of her daughter. I think this makes more sense, especially since it's specifically stated in Illica that Jewel has an aunt who received an odi-pendant as a marriage token.
Since the cover of Illica shows Britta with a new hairstyle, should we change the picture in her page's profile box to show the latest image of her?
The 'ordinary' gems are gems with lesser power than the Belt's gems. They are only useful in large amounts as their powers are too weak if they are used individually.
Personally I'd go with the lower-case. It just feels wrong to me to have them in upper-case, maybe because I'm so used to the gem names being in lower-case in the books. I don't see any reason why the gems names should be capitalized anyway, since they are technically just gems (though very powerful ones) and usually gem names (and object names in general) aren't capitalized. It's usually only people or place names that are capitalized.
What I noticed is that most characters seem to refer to the gems in the Belt as the great gems, to differentiate between the gems in the Belt and the ordinary gems.
I think that it doesn't matter which word is used more frequently. Kingdom, country, and land can all refer to Deltora.
Also, Australia is both an island and a country. :) Though it's a really big island.
